The Inn At Cape Cod, Location, location, location: Part Two: Within 20 Minutes By Car

Besides having so much within walking distance from the Inn, our location at the narrowest point of Cape Cod north to south - 5 miles coast to coast using Willow Street (15 minutes by car) - provides so many more possibilities, including beaches, restaurants, the best shopping, entertainment etc. This is in addition to what we have along Cape Cod Bay within a short drive of 20 minutes or less.

Like it or not, where most beach access is concerned, you will need a car to visit most beaches to carry your beach chairs, parasol, refreshments etc. Unlike most European beaches, these items will not be available when you arrive at the beach. We provide beach chairs and beach towels for our guests. Of the southern beaches we recommend Kalmus Beach (15 mins), which has a lot going for it. It is our favourite pick. You can walk to find waterside lunch options such as Spankys Clam Shack, The Black Cat or The Raw Bar (can recommend the jumbo lobster roll). Mayflower Beach more than holds its own in comparison, and would be our choice of Bay beaches (15 mins). We can't list everything here, but we can provide our own highlights of the most popular attractions, which are as follows:

By Car 20 minutes or less: Highlights

Island Ferries (Nantucket & Marthas Vineyard) including high speed: Hyannis Harbor, 5 miles

Whale-watching Excursion (Barnstable Harbor): 3.5 miles

Beaches: Cape Cod Bay: Chapin, Corporation, Mayflower, Howes Street; Nantucket Sound: Bass River, Seagull, Kalmus, Sea Street, Veterans Park, Craigville

Downtown: Hyannis Main Street, Kennedy Museum, Airport, Transit Terminal (train & bus services),  Shopping Mall, Commercial District, Melody Tent: 4 to 5 miles

Cycle track: Cape Cod rail trail: 15 minutes

The Arts: Dennis Cultural Centre: Cape Cod Playhouse, Fringe Cinema, Cape Cod Museum Of Art, Encore Bistro: 3.5 miles

More Favourite Restaurants: The Ocean House: 20 mins, Mattakeese Wharf, Fin, Encore Bistro, Black Sheep pub, The Pheasant, Naked Oyster, Gerardis Cafe, Bamboo, Roadhouse: all 10 to 12 mins

Outdoor Seafood Cafes & Clam Shacks: Sesuit Harbor Cafe: 15 mins, The Chart Room at Crosby's Boatyard: 20 mins, Spanky's: 12 mins, DPM'S Surfside Grill: 12 mins

Food? Well you're never far from it on Cape Cod, and it is diverse and to suit every mood. You may have noticed The Black Sheep above. That is our village sports bar, serving an incredible menu of good pub grub, including one of the best lobster rolls in season. You can spend a relaxing evening there in a friendly atmosphere.

If you love fresh and plentiful seafood like me, you will not want to miss Sesuit Harbor Cafe and raw bar in its ramshackle harbor-side setting, so beautiful on a sunny warm day. It is hard to think of anywhere better we would like to be to live and breathe a real Cape experience. But be prepared for serious boat envy!

The stand out restaurant within a 20 minute car ride - worth travelling any distance for - is The Ocean House right on the ocean front. Its not just the stunning split level dining that takes your breath away when you first arrive. There is a very "classy swagger" to the place that has you admiring every small attention to detail. The cuisine is innovative and creative too, and always delightfully presented. There is no such thing as a predictable dessert here! Make no mistake, Ocean House is a "not to be missed" experience, which requires booking well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Worth noting from our highlights above, are two of the top most popular activities of visitors: whale-watching and Island day trips. A 4 hour boat excursion will bring you along-side whales in their natural habitat, and just a 10 minute drive away. A variety of ferries, including high speed, run from the Hyannis dockside to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard - 15 minutes by car.

Next time, we'll give you the lowdown on attractions, restaurants etc 20 to 40 minutes away, including Chatham, Wellfleet and the National Seashore. We'll include one or two lobster and oyster suggestions along the way.
