The Unique Cape Cod Experience: Day Two on Nantucket

An early morning swim at Dennis Pond or jog/walk down to The Bay. You have decided to have a leisurely breakfast on the
terrace before taking Steamship Authority’s 11 am fast ferry from Hyannis Harbor to Nantucket, which is 5 miles away. The boat ride takes an hour.
You might equally have been inclined to get the earlier departure to allow more time to explore on your bikes – you can also hire these on The Island.
We supply breakfast to go typically for the earlier crossing, and that is nice to have on your way over to save time.

Most people spend around 6 hours on this stunning little island, and that’s about enough to plan and book the popular 6.15 pm return, which is nearly always
full. There is still the option of having dinner on Nantucket and returning on the last crossing of the day to Hyannis.

How is your time on Nantucket likely to be spent? You do not need transport to see the sights. Nearly all that most visitors
see is within walking distance. Several companies run tours by mini bus around the island with commentary. The Steamship Authority ticket office will provide you with details of their own tour, which takes about an hour, and is one that we can vouch for from our own personal experience.
Otherwise, you are likely to spend most of your time on foot – be sure to wear tough shoes to negotiate very rough and uneven cobble stoned pavements
– exploring historic buildings, people watching around the enormous luxury yachts berthed at the dock, having a waterside lunch and making at least
one visit to my own personal highlight, the Whaling Museum in Broad Street.

The Whaling Museum will enthrall you in many ways, not least listening to a factual, hair-raising account of The Essex’s famous voyage, upon which Moby
Dick was based. If like us you want a history lesson on how Nantucket prospered and grew around the whale trade, there is no better means to give you
the grounding. There is also one of the best panoramic views of Downtown and the Harbor from the open roof of the museum. You may have the time to
make a second visit to The Museum until the ferry departure back to Hyannis.

These sort of days out can be tiring, so you may decide to freshen up back at The Inn before a gentle stroll to one of our three great restaurants. There’s
nothing like being able to relax and enjoy the evening especially for the designated driver. There is an excellent wine cellar nextdoor at The Old
Yarmouth Inn just across the lawn from us, that might help you decide!!

Sleep well. You will need your strength for tomorrow’s whale-watching!
